The Piazza San Marco is the centre of life in Venice. A colourful and bustling square, it forms one of the most vivid memories from our 1994 visit to the city.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - BATH, ENGLAND

A visit to these Roman baths will make it easy to imagine what one very important feature of life in ancient Rome was like. The photo was taken in 1997 when my husband Paul, my son Jason and I had a holiday in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - ALANYA, TURKEY

Alanya is one of our favourite places in Turkey. In this photo taken in 2006, you can see the harbour with the gulets, the boats that take you out for the day to swim in the sea. In the background are the mountains that frame the harbour and the city itself. When we first visited Alanya in 1988, the Mediterranean coast of Turkey had not yet become a major tourist destination. In 2001, we spent several days here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Swimming at our hotel on Cleopatra Beach was wonderful, and almost every night we ate sea bream or sea bass. These were very small - one fish enough for only one person - causing us to wonder how soon the sea would be fished out.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - SAINT-BRIAC-SUR-MER, BRITTANY, FRANCE

This photo of Saint-Briac, taken in 2008, shows Brittany as it will remain in my memory - the sea nearby, clouds moving with the wind, the possibility of rain always present, trees stunted and shaped by the constant breezes, people out in boats. Saint-Briac, a lovely sea-side village, is named after an Irish priest who arrived here in the year 548.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - WINDSOR, UK

St. George's Chapel, located at Windsor Castle in the south of England, is a fine example of the Perpendicular Gothic style of architecture. It was founded in 1348 by King Edward III with improvements and enlargements made between 1475 and 1528. It is where funerals of the Kings and Queens of England are held and where they are buried. The photo was taken in 1997.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - QUEBEC CITY, CANADA

Until 1998, we had never visited Quebec City. We had heard about the beauty of the old city, but nevertheless were surprised at its extent and its attractiveness. It was interesting to hear French spoken everywhere and to learn about a part of Canada that enjoys a culture different from our own. The large building in the photo is the Chateau Frontenac, a luxury hotel that sits on the banks of the St. Lawrence river.

TRAVEL THE WORLD - CHANIA, CRETE

We ate at this restaurant in Chania, Crete in 2004. The room was open to the sky and the tables were surrounded by old stones. There was also a band and singer of Greek songs - altogether a memorable experience.
