In 1996, when we visited Charleston, South Carolina, we took a long walk through the historic district. Many of the old houses featured verandahs like the one in the photo. It was easy to imagine the elegantly dressed people of years ago drinking their mint juleps while sequestered within the cool shade of the verandah. On our walk, we stopped at the city hall, where a very nice lady gave us a half-hour talk on the interesting history of Charleston.
I can still remember vividly seeing the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street for the first time in 1998. This is the heart of the financial district and the facade of the building seemed a perfect symbol of its power. Unfortunately, as I post this blog in 2009 in the middle of a very serious recession, it must be acknowledged that Wall Street's image has suffered due to the recent antics of its major players and the near collapse of America's financial system.
