I like this 2006 photo taken at the harbour in Kyrenia, North Cyprus because of the colour of the rocks and the sea, and because when I took it I wondered what the fisherman was thinking and how he was feeling. I imagined him enjoying himself doing what he was doing in his beautiful surroundings even if he didn't catch any fish, and I envied him for it.
Naoussa on Paros, where we visited in 1998, is a picturesque fishing village with the white-washed houses and brilliant sunlight that we associate with the Greek islands. What is not so commonly seen are fishermen like these - laughing and chatting together while mending their nets - as men at Naoussa have no doubt been doing since ancient times.
Staithes, formerly a busy fishing port, lies within the North York Moors National Park. A very attractive town, it is now a major tourist destination. Because the geology of the area is of the Jurassic period, it is commonly called the Dinosaur Coast and attracts both professional and amateur geologists as visitors. We had good weather on the day we spent there om 1994. A chat with a few of the locals over a beer in the main pub near the port was very enjoyable.
