In 1998 when we visited Santorini, our hotel was built on the side of the cliff above the Caldera in what was once a donkey barn. Every day when we ate in the hotel restaurant, we were perched directly above the sea on the edge of the cliff. It was an amazingly beautiful view from there, but looking down made me feel dizzy.
Looking down on the Caldera on the Greek island of Santorini is a most spectacular and beautiful experience. It was truly amazing to think that something so large - eight miles by four miles - was created by a volcanic eruption. When we visited in 1998, our hotel, a former stable for donkeys, was perched on the very edge of the cliff. We spent every morning at breakfast gazing down on the wonderful view.
