This view of the English countryside, taken in 1994, shows one reason why Shropshire became my favourite destination for a day trip from Birmingham. How inviting this landscape is for the person who loves to walk! The photo was taken from Stiperstones. This name has been given to both the village and the adjacent nature reserve. The name, like so many in England, is interesting, and makes one curious about its derivation.
In the 1970's, I spent two years at university in Birmingham. During this time, I often drove into Shropshire to walk in the hills of the Long Mynd. In 1994, I returned to Shropshire for a week, and visited Ledbury, a market town that has many half-timbered buildings as in this narrow lane that is reminiscent of medieval or Elizabethan times.
While living in Birmingham in the 1970's I often walked in the Long Mynd. It was a great pleasure to return some 20 years later. These hills are beautiful and, although they give you a good feeling of being miles from civilization, the walking is easy and, at least in the 1970's, perfectly safe.
